On April 18, 2012, OFID Director-General Mr. Suleiman J. Al-Herbish signed three grant agreements that will help bolster activities aimed at combating HIV/AIDS and supporting scientists from developing countries. The grants were extended to the following organizations:
- UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) will receive a grant of US$1.2 million to help fund a project that will support 14 African countries in the development and implementation of comprehensive education sector responses to HIV/AIDS. The agreement was countersigned by Ms. Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO.
- A grant of US$250,000 will support participants' from low-income countries to attend the 19th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2012) that will be held in Washington D.C., July 22-27. Organized by the International AIDS Society (IAS), the Conference’s theme will be “Turning the Tide Together.” The agreement was countersigned by Mr. Bertrand Audoin, Executive Director of the IAS.
- A €500,000 grant will support the work of the Lindau Foundation by becoming a principal patron of the Foundation, which will establish an OFID Fellowship Program that will enable young scientists from OFID Member States and least-developed countries to attend the Lindau meetings. Mr. Nikolaus Turner, Executive Director of the Lindau Foundation, countersigned the agreement.
